The Mighty Ship of the Stars
By Gumnut
1992
I'll tell a tale of a mighty ship
A mighty ship of the stars
Which had the stars to steer by
To explore the many afars
She was silver borne from bow to stern
Aflame with many a light
Her winged nacelles spread to the wind
Of the still and eternal night
Four hundred and thirty persons stowed
Aboard this glistening bird
Living their lives to a noble vow
Written in a hopeful word
For many a star that passed them by
Was a skill aboard that ship
Four hundred and thirty talents stowed
Aboard for their five year trip
With them was he who led them proudly
Captain in name, life and love
James T. Kirk, an eagle in flight
Scouring the dark skies above
Hair of gold as was his shirt and braid
Commanding with hazel eyes
Ulysses' wit in strategy
Bore him many tries
Beside he who commanded in gold
Stood he, who in science blue
With pointed ears and slanting brow,
Commanded silently, too
Vulcan was Spock, Commander in grade
Although Human by a half
The emotionless first officer
Was never to know a laugh
And then the admirable Doctor McCoy
A witty good humoured soul
Advocate of life, defeater of death
Answering the surgeon's call
Leonard McCoy take a bite at Spock
And tickle his Vulcan heart
Wiggle your finger at Jimmy boy
The psychologist is smart
Down below in the caverns of steel,
In the belly of the ship
Worked a man by the name of Scott
The engineer of the trip
He loved those bonny engines so
With the strength of a Scottish heart
"My bairns!" he'd cry, watching them strain
"Captain, they'll blow apart!"
And Sulu, the helmsman at the wheel
Weathering her through the storms
With a multitude of interests
And a healthy grin that warmed
The coldest night and saddest day
On that worthy bridge for years
As the stars streak and the ship moves
As the helmsman changes gears
By his side the navigator sits
With a mop of thick brown hair
And youth in years, Pavel Chekov
Russian extraordinaire
A Russian proverb at every word
And an accent to match his zeal
Charting a course between the stars
And the universe beneath the keel
And of the songs the stars inspire
A nightingale does interpret
Lieutenant Nyota Uhura
Communications expert
Her voice echoes throughout the ship
A linguist of learned thought
A woman of strength and virtue
And of beauty to be sought
Captain and crew of the Enterprise
The mighty ship of the stars
As the Great Bird of the Galaxy
Rules silently from afar
Through elation and through tragedy
Through primitive and high-tech
These valiant souls and their silver ship
Continue their Star Trek.
