Tangles by Liz Powley

Tangles – work in progress

It looks better in real life, trust me. My scanner has issues with red, as does my camera and printer. It must be the awkward end of the spectrum. in any case,I have red and yellow gel pen squiggles all over this and it has developed into a rather interesting background. I call it a work in progress because I think it needs a focus, something I have yet to work out what.

Inspiration point – I want to write music

I’ve known for a long time that I don’t see the world quite the same way as most people. I’ve been known to be weird, odd, out of step, Aquarian, or just plain strange. I’m good at getting the wrong end of the stick in a conversation, and in group learning, my answers are always off centre of the norm. But it is my way of viewing the world that makes me the artist I am. So here I am going to blatantly share some of my points of inspiration, some of those personal moments that just spark for me and make me want to create. And perhaps I can share that spark, too.

Coloured zentangle

I’ve been fascinated by this background from my acrylic experiments last week. it has been yelling at me to create something from it. But I don’t know what. So last night I printed off a couple of copies of the square, and since they are reproduceable copies, I felt free to make as many mistakes as I had to. That is always very freeing. I still didn’t know what to make of it, so I just put my gel pen to the paper and drew. I don’t know what I’ve come up with, but I like it.

Explorations – Bubble painting

I was giving my eldest daughter a bath one night, swirling bubblebath around in the tub, when the bubbles suddenly grabbed my attention. They had a beautiful texture. I wondered if they could carry paint and leave a print on paper. Of course, I had to explore the idea.

My Creative Neighbourhood – The Thriving Artists Project

This post is part of a series I started some time ago and would like to resurrect here at my new homebase. This is where I look around at my fellow artists and highlight some of the wonderful things they’ve been up to recently. Anything that catches my eye, rattles my brain, or drops my jaw ends up here. Things I feel I need company in oggling at and admiring. If it’s here, it’s good.

Acrylic experiments

Last week I played with some new acrylic paints my parents-in-law were kind enough to buy me for Christmas. I didn’t really paint anything, I did pure experimentation with a bunch of acrylic mediums. I had no idea what I was doing as I’ve only ever really used a retarder and nothing else in my paint and I was also using fluid acrylics, a type of acrylic I haven’t really used either.

So I played, and this is what I came up with.

Sunday Sketches from the week of funk

I’ve only got dud sketches for this week’s Sunday Sketches. Last week was a funk week so very little was done. First up we have an attempt to answer last week’s Illustration Friday prompt of ‘deja-vu’. I had a concept, but my brain wouldn’t supply me with an image to fully communicate what I was […]

Experiments with carbon paper

Drawing Lab Challenge #11 – how did you do? I managed to slip off the rails somewhat and do something not quite what the challenge was asking for. I didn’t really feel like drawing something, I felt like playing with textures, so I did. I grabbed some carbon paper (of which I have a pile […]
